========
========

January tournament: Day 13 – Kotoshogiku loses his unbeaten record!

Oh dear. Kotoshogiku slipped to defeat. He succumbed to Toyonoshima’s full-blooded attack in no time, and ended up spinning off the dohyo. But there was no celebration over this result. In fact, not a single floor cushion was thrown. Instead, the crowd remained deafeningly silent.

But Kotoshogiku’s championship hopes are far from over, for if we look at the leaderboard at the end of Day 13, Hakuho and Kotoshogiku are level on one defeat apiece, and Harumafuji and Toyonoshima are just behind them on two losses. The title race has basically been whittled down to these four men.

Next up for Kotoshogiku is a tough encounter with Tochiozan. On the final day, he will probably face his fellow Ozeki, Goeido.

Kotoshogiku’s head-to-head record against Tochiozan reads 13-17, meaning he clearly has difficulties in handling him. And his record against Goeido is nothing to shout about either. Basically, I have absolutely no idea who will be lifting the Emperor’s Cup come Sunday night!

Now onto other matters! I usually go and eat somewhere after watching live sumo, and today I headed to the restaurant managed by the former Ozeki Miyabiyama (the current Fujishima stablemaster). It is called, perhaps unsurprisingly, “Yakiniku Miyabiyama.”

And just as I entered the restaurant, I happened to come across the owner himself!

Look at how many sumo wrestler autographs he has hanging up on his wall!

He even has some prize-money envelopes out on display.

And there’s even this special service on offer for those who are interested! (You can try on the yukata that Miyabiyama wore while still an active wrestler).

I first ordered yam and kimchi, which was so delicious I could have eaten it all night. I then plumped for a piece of meat as large as a sumotori’s handprint, and piled up on the ribs and other meaty delights comprising the “Miyabi Selection.” Every piece of meat was a joy to eat.

For the final dish I went for scallop gruel. It seems that Miyabiyama got his favorite Osaka yakiniku restaurant – which he frequented for 20 years following his entry into the sumo world – to teach him their secret recipe for his treasured scallop gruel. He seems to have been taught extremely well judging by the taste! It’s well worth treating yourself to, even if you’re feeling full from all the meat beforehand!

Sumo wrestlers can easily be found among the clientele here, and I was able to have my photograph taken with some of them today. If you’re a sumo fan, you’ll simply love this place. And even if you’re not, you’ll still enjoy the food!
