May Tournament, Day 13: Unbeaten Hakuho and Kisenosato finally go head-to-head!

Mie Furuya’s Sumo Blog, Vol. 24

The fact that Kisenosato has gone the first 12 days unbeaten is just simply unreal! I still can’t quite take it in!

Certainly, this tournament has seen a very calm-looking Kisenosato. He always used to blink his eyes at lightning speed during bouts of nervousness, but we haven’t seen any of that this time. And even when he’s pushed back to the edge of the dohyo, he calmly stands his ground and remains in the ring.

He’s keeping his hips lower than usual too. And the face he displays when waiting for his match at ringside is a picture of tranquility.

He looks rather like the Giant Buddha Statue of Ushiku (his hometown). Even just thinking about today’s final match is enough to get my hands sweating. Nevertheless, I’ve decided to grin and bear the tension and support Kise in person here at the Kokugikan.
