If you’re not watching juryo, you’re really missing out!

Mie Furuya’s Sumo Blog, Vol. 27

The May tournament also saw some great sumo action in the second division, juryo. The title may have gone to the handsome veteran from Kokonoe Stable, Chiyonokuni, but there were also some sparkling performances from the youngsters which ensured we couldn’t take our eyes off the action.

I found myself particularly drawn to three Japanese wrestlers competing under their real names: Ishiura, Ura and Sato.

Masakatsu Ishiura (26), Miyagino Stable

Ishiura is not an apprentice of the Miyagino stablemaster, but training under yokozuna Hakuho himself. These type of apprentices, known as “uchi-deshi,” are taken on by wrestlers who wish to own a stable one day. They will then accompany their “master” to that new stable once it is founded. Ishiura’s father is the head coach of the sumo team at the prestigious Tottori Johoku High School, responsible for training up Terunofuji, Ichinojo and Takanoiwa. At 173 cm and 115 kg, Ishiura may be small, but his marvelous athleticism allows him to fell far bigger foes with both belt maneuvers and leg-trips. Even if you’re not a sumo fan, you’ll really enjoy watching him.

Kazuki Ura, Kise Stable

There are a lot of senior wrestlers plying their trade at Kise Beya, including Gagamaru, Jokoryu, Tokushoryu, Hidenoumi and Akiseyama. Ura somehow stands among them at just 173 cm and 127 kg. The reason he’s popular is basically his “acrobatic sumo” filled with entertaining tricks. He started doing sumo at just four years old, and also started to learn freestyle wrestling from the fourth year of elementary school. He electrifies the sumo hall with a dazzling array of flashy techniques that guys from a purely sumo background simply can’t pull off: shumokuzori and izori, for example. I hope he makes it to the top division soon and gets to test himself against the very best.

Takanobu Sato (19) Takanohana Stable

I’ve only just realized it, but Ishiura, Ura and Sato are all exactly the same height – 173 cm! But Sato weighs much more than the other two at 150 kg. It is said that Sato’s father was a huge Takanohana fan, and therefore used the “Taka” kanji character for his own son’s name. The fact that his son would then not only become a sumo wrestler but actually apprentice with Takanohana himself is just a fantastic story. A specialist in push-sumo, Sato drags his body through 40 or 50 practice matches in each morning training session – just as his stable master did during his active days. His charming face and cute rotund frame have helped endear him to large numbers of female fans!
