Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten, a long-established brand from Nara founded in 1716, is now selling a limited number of “Bon Festival Decorations Shouryouuma Set,” a piece of interior decor that will fit in with modern living environments, at its directly managed stores nationwide.
"Seireiuma" is one of the most common offerings during Obon, and is a vehicle used by ancestors to travel between this world and the afterlife. Made of cucumbers and eggplants with legs attached using toothpicks, it represents a fast horse so that the ancestors can return home quickly, and a cow so that they can return slowly when they are sent off.
This time, Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten has developed an original "Obon decoration" that can be displayed as interior décor, making use of natural materials such as wood and hemp and the techniques of woodcarvers. The representative motifs of Obon decorations, "Shouryuma" (spirit horse) and "Okuribi" (sending bonfire), are set on a floor board.

The "Spirit Horses" are carefully hand-carved by artisans one by one, and are made from Chinese wood, which is also used for Buddhist altar carvings, making them simple yet authentic decorations.

The hemp ground cherries represent the welcoming and farewell fires that serve as guideposts for ancestors, and are based on the custom of burning hemp sawdust.
The warm design fits in well with a variety of living spaces, both Japanese and Western, such as the living room or entryway, and can be displayed every year as a summer decoration, like a Bon altar.
Why not show your appreciation for your loved ones once a year with these Obon decorations?
