Kabuki Coloring Book: Intricate Beauty from Ichikawa Somegoro

Looking for a way to fill the time at home before spring arrives? We have a suggestion: the new Coloring Book of Kabuki Picture Scrolls, an adult coloring book overseen by popular kabuki actor Ichikawa Somegoro.

The illustrations are by Junko Suzuki, whose previous work includes A Coloring Book of Japan Heian Picture Scrolls. This book depicts legendary scenes from well-known plays like The Subscription List, Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees, and The Treasury of Loyal Retainers (also known as “The Forty-Seven Ronin”). Under Somegoro’s direction, everything from poses and blocking to costume and props are rendered with careful attention to detail.

The book also contains on-stage photography of Somegoro’s Tadanobu at the Go Board, an introductory manga, hints about popular patterns and colors during the Edo period, background on the works appearing, and other useful information. The lines are also drawn thickly to make for a stress-free coloring experience!

To celebrate the release of the book, a Kabuki Coloring Contest to be judged by Somegoro himself is also being held. All you need to do is color in Tadanobu at the Go Board and Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees and send them in to enter!
