The enormity of Kotoshogiku’s title triumph is still apparent!

Apparently, 55,000 people turned out to witness Kotoshogiku’s championship parade in Matsudo City. That’s about five days’ worth of full houses at the Ryogoku sumo hall!

It was amazing to see TV viewer ratings peak at 29% on the final day of the January tournament! My goodness hasn’t Kotoshogiku outdone himself! Even though it was a Japanese wrestler going for the top-division title for the first time in a decade, it was still a remarkable TV audience for a sumo match. The result saw not only triggered newsflashes but also – apparently – newspaper extras.

News information shows carried heart-warming pieces on Kotoshogiku for days on end, and constantly re-ran the footage of the joint press-conference he conducted alongside his wife. The couple even guested on an episode of SMAPxSMAP – the show fronted by the most famous boy band in Japan! The kind consideration he showed towards the media coupled with his excellent handling of journalists’ questions likely gained Kotoshogiku even more fans.

To be honest, until about the time of last year’s May tournament, never in my wildest dreams could I see Kotoshogiku actually winning a championship! (I guess I should apologize to him and his fans for that!) But, remember, he’d sprained both knees, torn his pectoral muscle and basically suffered injury after injury. This had caused him to face demotion no fewer than five times. (For newcomers, I should add that a wrestler on sumo’s second rank of Ozeki, like Kotoshogiku, will be demoted if he suffers a losing score in consecutive tournaments. After he posts the first losing score, we refer to his status as “kadoban – on the verge of demotion.”)

In post-championship interviews, Kotoshogiku revealed that he had actually thought about packing sumo in on several occasions. But last year he was able to find an excellent personal trainer who helped develop his torso, and a wife who could give him invaluable emotional support and add to his mental strength. He has spectacularly revived his career as a result.

During the January tournament, his sumo was great from start to finish, and his victory over Hakuho practically caused my eyes to moisten! And he can even reach sumo’s highest rank of Yokozuna if he captures the next championship too! It will be no easy task, but if he can do it… well, that really will be something!
