New Visitor Center “Achi Base” Opens in Nagano Under Japan’s Finest Night Skies
Last month, a new visitor center called Achi Base opened in Achi, Nagano Prefecture, recently recognized as Japan’s number 1 stargazing spot.
Achi is a quiet village nestled amid Nagano’s southern mountains, long known for its spectacular peach blossoms and the Hirugami Hot Springs—known as the “waters of beautiful skin” (bihada no yu) for the revitalizing effect they are thought to have. In addition to these charms, a 2006 survey by the Ministry of the Environment found Achi to be the best place in Japan to view the stars by night.
Achi Base offers sightseers information about the village and its surroundings, as well as assistance finding and reserving accommodation in the area—including the Hirugami Hot Springs. It also has an interior dining area with a unique twist: by day, visitors can relax in a concept cafe based on the Sanrio characters “Kiki and Lala,” while by night, the space becomes a cosmic bar run in collaboration with the much-talked-about group of creators NAKED. And, of course, Achi Base also has souvenirs for sale and a rental corner for bicycles and outdoor goods.
If you’re visiting Achi to see the stars or relax in the hot springs, why not drop by Achi Base as well?
