Kakurean Hidaji: Hidden Hermitage in the Hida Hot Springs
A place of peace at the foot of the mountains
The vigorously flowing Okuhida hot springs in Takayama, Gifu prefecture, are a popular rest and recuperation spot for visitors from all around Japan. Kakurean Hidaji is located at the Fukuji springs within Okuhida, surrounded by mountains that soar to over a kilometer in height. No wonder its name literally means "hidden hermitage"!
Kakurean Hidaji's main building is a traditional one-story structure that seems almost to have grown out of the rich natural beauty surrounding it. The interior is in traditional Hida style, with great beams crisscrossing the warm, welcoming space. The atmosphere is so rich that simply crossing the threshold feels like entering another world.
There are 12 guest suites in all, each with two rooms: a larger 10-tatami mat main room and a 4.5-tatami mat drawing room with a sunken kotatsu heated table. The color scheme is dark and soothing, and the excellent view of the garden and the changing seasons from the drawing room also helps encourage relaxation.
