Dive Into a New World of Creation at the Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson teamLab Borderless
Computer graphics and other forms of digital art are leaping off the screen to evolve into direct experiences mediated by technology like projection mapping and VR. Now digital art pioneers teamLab have joined forces with the Mori Building to create the world’s first museum dedicated to digital art. The museum has around 50 works on display, some never been seen by the public before.
The Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson teamLab Borderless opened in June, in Palette Town, Odaiba, Tokyo. A vast space of 10,000 square meters, it is devoted entirely to digital artwork. The interior comprises of five worlds around the theme “Borderless,” but there are no boundaries between the artworks themselves, or even between works and the viewers. Works leap into the galleries, move through the corridors, interact and fuse with each other, and draw viewers into their world too.
Exhibits include the light-filled 3D “teamLab Athletics Forest,” where visitors can climb and explore; “Learn & Play! teamLab Future Park,” with a fruit-bearing slide and sketchbook aquarium; and many other art experiences to refresh visitors in body and soul.
The art extends even to the “En Tea House,” where visitors can enjoy a refreshing cup of tea with projection-mapping flowers. Cold-brewed tea, yuzu green tea (both 500 JPY) and more are available.
As exciting new structures and facilities are created in anticipation of 2020, when the eyes of the world will be upon Tokyo, a new spot has been born on the Bay Coast area. This museum gives us a glimpse of the future of art, in which viewers and artworks are merged without borders.
