“Kakigori for Adults”: Enjoy a Twilight Treat in a Hotel Bar this Summer
Kakigori, a traditional Japanese shaved ice dessert, is currently enjoying a major renaissance propelled by self-styled “’gor-ers” (shaved ice freaks) who eat it all year round. Across Japan, the most exclusive kakigori restaurants have people lining up even in the middle of winter. Still, it’s even more delicious in summer. This year, we recommend “Kakigori for Adults,” presented by The Dining Room, a restaurant and bar on the 26th floor of the Strings Hotel by InterContinental Tokyo. The hotel is directly connected to JR Shinagawa Station, and offers different “Kakigori for Adults” flavors every year. In 2018, those flavors are the pitch-black “Gothic Kakigori” and the fruit-packed “Fairy Tale Kakigori.”
“Gothic Kakigori” is served in a champagne glass. The ice is dyed black with bamboo charcoal and flavored with coffee, Kahlua, and rum. The traditional milk syrup is brandy-based and served in a test tube.
“Fairy Tale Kakigori,” on the other hand, is garnished with fruit and edible flowers. Soy milk-based, it has two layers in different natural colors: pastel pink from beets, and white from milk. It is served with a vodka syrup.
The startling inventiveness and perfect execution of the Dining Room’s “Kakigori for Adults” causes a stir among kakigori fans every year. The prosciutto and melon kakigori once on offer is still fondly remembered!
Black or white, both of these desserts are available at the bar from evening on as the perfect aperitif for adult palates. You might not have considered dropping by a hotel for a kakigori on your way home from work before... but it may become the new hot trend in Shinagawa.
