The Kyocera Museum of Art in Kyoto will host an exhibition showcasing the prints of Yayoi Kusama, a world-renowned avant-garde artist. KusamaThe exhibition "The World of Yayoi Prints - Repetition and Multiplication" is being held until Sunday, September 9th. Currently, the second half of the exhibition, which started in July and will see the replacement of all works, is open to the public.
Yayoi Kusama's works, known for her polka dots and nets, have captivated people around the world with their sense of scale that seems to fill the space and their overwhelming energy that seems to grow and grow. This energy is not limited to spatial installations, but is also present in the art of reproduction known as printmaking.
This is the first large-scale exhibition to focus on another aspect of Kusama's art, her prints. Everyday motifs such as shoes, dresses, hats, and lemon squash are fused with her signature polka dots and nets, emanating a rich vitality on the canvas.
The exhibition features around 330 pieces, including precious prints from the Matsumoto City Museum of Art in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Kusama's hometown, as well as works from the artist's own collection. Among them are the silkscreen series "Love is Forever," which was produced over a period of about four years from 2004 and marked the starting point of her recent breakthrough, and a series of woodblock prints of Mt. Fuji, which was realized through the "co-creation" of avant-garde art and a publisher inheriting the production techniques of ukiyo-e from the Edo period. From her early works to her most recent masterpieces, the exhibition allows visitors to experience the charm and trajectory of Yayoi Kusama's print art.
Perhaps it was inevitable that Kusama, whose creative endeavors revolved around the proliferation of polka dots and nets, would encounter printmaking, an art form of reproduction. With this in mind, why not let yourself be carried away by the expansion of colors and shapes?
