Onsen Oyado Ryugon stands on 16 acres of land in Niigata Prefecture’s Minamiuonuma City. The onsen (hot springs) inn has been beloved as the inn representing Niigata Prefecture by the guests. Many writers and artists have stayed at the inn and the Ryuo Tournament of shogi (traditional Japanese chess) had been held at the inn as well. In autumn of 2019, the inn has reached its 50th anniversary. While keeping its traditional appearance, the inn has been reborn with a new concept and a new name called ryugon.
The villa suite with a garden view features a relaxing atmosphere that is is achieved by the interiors using genuine wood and the furnitures that are each hand-crafted by the craftsmen.
While keeping the appearance of the traditional wooden architectures that are designated as the cultural property, such as the village mayor’s house and the landowner’s residence from the Edo period, Ryugon have recreated the guest rooms into an atmosphere where guests can relax and forget the passage of time. Few examples are the villa suites that are equipped with an open-air onsen, and the classic rooms with simple and cozy atmosphere. Ryugon is proud of their alkaline onsen that flows directly from the source of the Muikamachi Onsen. The water of the onsen is easily absorbed and softens the skin. For the guests who wishes to relax and have a good soak in the onsen, the indoor bath is equipped with a shallow bath as well.
The terrace of the villa suite is equipped with an open-air onsen bath. The onsen flows directly from the Muikamachi onsen for 24 hours so that guests can lay back and relax anytime they wish.
Drinks and sweets are served at the irori (traditional fireplace) lounge. The irori is lit during autumn to spring.
The irori is set on the center of the restaurant so that the guests can watch the seasonal ingredients being grilled using charcoal right in front of their eyes.
The restaurant features gastronomic dishes of the yukiguni (snow country), including a carefully grilled dish using charcoal. Its cuisine is based on the ingredients and traditional cuisine of the local area that has been eaten for generations.
Another charm of ryugon is experiencing the architecture, lifestyle and culture of the yukiguni, such as the spa using the kura (traditional storehouse) and the activities at the doma (traditional earthen floor). The restaurant serves yukiguni gastronomic courses based on the local cuisines that are rich in flavors together with local seasonal ingredients that are grilled using charcoal and the irori. In addition, Ryugon features several common spaces such as the irori lounge, garden lounge and bar for guests to enjoy the local sake and dishes while sharing a conversation, sit back and read their favorite book or to spend their time as they wish. Ryugon, the snow-surrounded onsen inn that is blended with the new and old, will continue to fascinate their guests with their creativity and culture that has been cultivated by the environment of yukiguni.
