The Niigata Prefectural Bandaijima Art Museum will hold the "Tanikawa Shuntaro Picture Book Department Store Exhibition" from Saturday, January 2025th to Sunday, April 1th, 18.

The poet Shuntaro Tanikawa, who passed away in November 2024 at the age of 11, has created over 92 picture books since the 1960s in collaboration with various artists and photographers. Word play, clues to understanding the world around us, the joy of nonsense. And what is common to these diverse picture books, which deal with the themes of the fun, difficulty, and preciousness of life, as well as death and war, is Tanikawa's hopeful gaze toward the reader.

This exhibition will feature about 20 picture books, and together with a variety of creators including art directors, video artists, and architects, will display original illustrations from the picture books, moving images of pictures and words, recitations and sounds, giant picture scrolls, original installations, animation works, etc. The pictures and words jump out of the picture books in a new way, making it enjoyable for everyone from children to adults.

In the final corner, there is an exhibition of special picture books, "Kanai-kun" and "Boku," which have the themes of "life" and "death." You can also sit on a three-dimensional bench modeled after the picture book "Hole," co-written by Tanigawa and illustrator Makoto Wada, and carefully read the picture books introduced in the exhibition.

During the exhibition, related events such as commemorative concerts, gallery talks, and picture book readings will also be held.
