In the Meiji period art world, which was dominated by men, Uemura Shōen made a great deal of effort and built a reputation as a leading figure in the painting of beautiful women. While upholding the traditions of Japanese painting, she placed emphasis on the inner beauty of women, and her delicate and detailed depictions of their graceful figures continue to impress many people today, transcending the ages.
