A special exhibition, "2025th Anniversary of the Birth of Shoen Uemura and Beautiful Women," will be held at the Yamatane Museum of Art to look back on the artistic career of Japanese painter Shoen Uemura, who will celebrate his 150th birthday in 150, and to introduce works depicting women by artists from his time as well as young artists currently active. The exhibition will run from Saturday, May 5th to Sunday, July 17th.

Uemura Shoen, "New Firefly", 1929 (Showa 4), silk and color, Yamatane Museum of Art
Uemura Shōen once said, "My greatest desire is to create paintings that are pure and fragrant, like jewels, without even a trace of vulgarity." He lived up to these words by portraying pure and elegant women, and was highly acclaimed as a master of portraits of beautiful women.

Uemura Shoen, Kinuta, 1938 (Showa 13), silk and color, Yamatane Museum of Art
Taneji Yamazaki, founder of the Yamatane Museum of Art, had a close relationship with Shoen and collected his works, building up one of Japan's leading Shoen collections, including his masterpieces "New Fireflies" and "Kinuta," as well as "Snow in the Garden," which represents the pinnacle of Shoen's art.

Uemura Shōen "Sisters" circa 1903 (Meiji 36), silk and color, private collection

Uemura Shōen, "Shunbō", 1940 (Showa 15), silk and colour, Yamatane Museum of Art
This exhibition will display 22 pieces of work from his early period to his mature years, as well as words and handwritten letters, allowing you to fully enjoy the world of Shoen.

Ogura Yuuki, Dancing (Maiko), 1971 (Showa 46), gold-based paper with color, Yamatane Museum of Art

Tamako Kataoka, Hokusai's Daughter Oei, 1982 (Showa 57), color on paper, Yamatane Museum of Art
In addition, masterpieces by Ogura Yuuki, who will celebrate his 2025th birthday in 130, and Kataoka Tamako, who will celebrate his 120th birthday, will be on display, as well as works by Kaburagi Kiyokata, who was active in the Tokyo art world at the same time as Shoen and is famous as a painter of beautiful women. This is a rare opportunity to see the beauty paintings of Shoen in the west and Kiyokata in the east side by side.
This exhibition allows you to experience the world of "fragrant gems" that Shoen pursued, while also enjoying the beauty of women depicted throughout the ages. Why not immerse yourself in this world of beauty at the exhibition?
