The Ibaraki Museum of Modern Art will be holding an exhibition called "Travel-related Paintings: From Utagawa Hiroshige to Higashiyama Kaii," showcasing about 200 works that are full of the charm of "travel" from the Edo period to the present. The exhibition will run from July 7th (Wed) to August 16st (Sun).

Highlights include the ukiyo-e series "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" by the first Utagawa Hiroshige, "Floating Lantern," a painting of a scene that Yokoyama Taikan encountered in India, and "White Night Light," one of a series of Scandinavian works by Higashiyama Kaii, a nationally renowned landscape painter who lived a life of travel. These masterpieces have touched people's hearts across time and region.

Another attraction is that through the paintings on display, you can virtually experience touring famous places around the world that the artists visited and painted, such as Europe and Asia. As for scenic spots in Japan, there will be works depicting scenery unique to Ibaraki, such as Mt. Fuji, which has appeared in many famous paintings, as well as Itako, Lake Kasumigaura, Mt. Tsukuba, and Fukuroda Falls.

Other than these, there are also other travel materials on display, such as the popular Edo-period guidebook "Travel Caution Collection," the travel magazine "Tourist" designed by Japan's first graphic designer, Hisui Sugiura, and railway posters. There are many valuable materials that convey the travel culture and social atmosphere of the time.
