Based on the tales of gods depicted in ancient mythology, the poetry-music drama "Yakumo Tattsu," performed by professionals in authentic costumes, garnered a great response during its New Year's performances from 2022 to 2023. This performance centers on the coming-of-age story of Susanoo, a god who played a major role in the construction of the nation of Japan, and depicts the communion of his soul with Princess Iwanaga through music and dance.
The script is written by Kazuhisa Tobe, known for his new Kabuki production of "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind," while the story is written and directed by Kikunojo Onoe, the fourth head of the Onoe School of Japanese dance, who also received high praise for his new Kabuki production of "Touken Ranbu."
The role of Susanoo will be played by Onoe Ukon, a young and talented young actor in the world of Kabuki. The role of Iwanagahime will be played by former Takarazuka Revue Star Troupe top star Kurenai Yuzuru. The role of Ninigi-no-Mikoto will be played by Sato Ryuji, the role of Izanagi-no-Mikoto by Wada Takuma, and the role of Konohanasakuya-hime by Umeda Ayaka, making for a stellar cast that transcends genres.
The music will be performed by violinist Ikuko Kawai and traditional Japanese instruments. The stage will also be decorated with the Iwami Kagura dance of the thunderous giant snake, allowing you to experience the mystery and power of the mythical world.
In conjunction with this performance, a workshop with the theme of "Getting Familiar with Japanese Traditions" will be held at the Tokyo International Forum. A diverse program is planned that will allow people to experience Japanese culture, including ikebana, tsuzumi (Japanese hand drums), Edo woodblock prints (ukiyo-e), and a giant calligraphy performance. Reservations are now being accepted on the official website.
At the beginning of the film, a Shinto priest performs a purification ritual to cleanse the impurities of 2025 and welcome 2026, making it a setting that is likely to attract attention as a fitting setting for welcoming the new year.
