Hoshinoya Nara Prison, a luxury hotel utilizing the former Nara Prison, a national important cultural property, is scheduled to open on June 25, 2026.
Hoshinoya is a luxury brand that offers overwhelming, extraordinary experiences that make use of the history and culture of the area, with the concept of "a special seat for that moment." Hoshinoya Nara Prison will be the ninth facility of the brand.
The setting is the former Nara Prison, the only surviving building of the five major prisons planned by the Meiji government.
The exterior of the former Nara Prison
While retaining architectural design elements of great historical value, such as the red brick exterior walls and the radial cell blocks that are symbolic of the former prison, the building incorporates a new design that incorporates modern sensibilities, based on the concept of being an "important cultural property of the future."
The former Nara Prison, which has stood for over 100 years, will take on a new role as a luxury hotel while retaining its history.

All 48 guest rooms are suites, consisting of several connected former cells, each with a spacious interior including a bedroom, living room, and dining room.
The interior is protected by thick brick walls and the light changes with the time, allowing you to spend a tranquil and luxurious time.
The guest room type "The 10-Cell" is an iconic room made up of 10 solitary confinement cells, the smallest unit of space, connected together.
Over 100 years old hand-laid bricks that emerge from beneath the plaster, thick iron pillars that support architecture for a new era, and wood panels all harmonize in a beautiful way, combining the history of this important cultural property with modern sensibilities.

The dining area in the separate building will serve Japanese-style French cuisine, which incorporates traditional Western techniques and is enhanced with a Japanese sensibility. Other plans include spatial presentations and activities that will allow guests to experience the extraordinary that only Hoshinoya can offer.
Additionally, within the grounds of the former Nara Prison, in addition to the luxury hotel "Hoshinoya Nara Prison," the "Nara Prison Museum by Hoshino Resorts" (available for day trips) will be opened, which will convey the history and architecture of the former Nara Prison.
The Nara Prison Museum is scheduled to open on April 27, 2026, with the concept of "Questions from a Beautiful Prison."
