Inden-ya, a long-established Koshu Inden manufacturer founded in 1582, has released original products in collaboration with picture book author Leo Lionni's masterpiece "Frederick" as the second installment of its "Picture Book Collection," available at Inden-ya's directly managed stores and official online shop.
"Inden" is a leather craft made of deerskin with patterns applied using lacquer, and "Koshu Inden" made in Yamanashi Prefecture has been certified as a traditional craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The second wave of products includes seven types in total: three coin purses, a wallet (long wallet), a pass case, a pouch, and a pen case.
For the release of the second series, new colors of deerskin, lacquer, and chintz were developed to faithfully recreate the world of "Frederic," which is a collage of various types of paper used in collages.
The warm beige deer leather is combined with the chintz technique of layering multiple colors to create the colorful and intricate "Frederick" Inden, featuring Frederick and the mice, pebbles, flowers, and the handwritten signature "Frederick." All of the work is handmade by the skilled craftsmen at Inden-ya, who have inherited the techniques of Koshu Inden over 400 years.
