Chiaki Maki Textile Art Exhibition "Voice of Nature"

"Voice of Nature," an exhibition by Maki Chiaki, who creates exceptional textile art from her studio at the foot of the Himalayas in northern India, will be held at Hillside Forum in Daikanyama, Tokyo from Thursday, April 2nd to Sunday, April 12th, 2026.

"The most cherished textiles are those used in daily life." With this belief in mind, Maki has been working on textiles with various uses for many years. Since 2012, she has been based in the foothills of the Himalayas, where she grows plants, spins thread, dyes, and weaves. This exhibition will feature approximately 40 pieces born from the combination of overwhelming nature and tireless handiwork.

The works on display at the venue are the "voice of nature" that reached Maki's five senses. Rather than someone intentionally "making" something, the materials decide their own destination and before you know it, a form emerges - this series of events quietly approaches you like a "landscape."

During the exhibition, a talk session entitled "Listening to the Voice of Nature" will be held with Maki Chiaki, textile artist Ishigaki Akiko, and architect Nakamura Yoshifumi.  It looks set to be a rich discussion in which the perspectives of all three will intersect.

Additionally, on Tuesday, April 7th, there will be a gallery talk with Bijoy Jain, one of India's leading architects and head of Studio Mumbai, who designed Maki's studio, Ganga Maki.

Regarding her work, Maki says, "You are free to imagine how to use it, or just look at it. It would be my greatest joy if people could approach it at their own emotional distance."

These objects have been woven together with the nature of the Himalayas and transformed into sculptures. How do you feel when you stand before them? Why not come to the venue and see for yourself?
