Luxury hotel brand Capella Hotels & Resorts has opened its first property in Japan, Capella Kyoto. Located in Miyagawa-cho, a geisha district close to Kyoto's Gion district, and within walking distance of the Kamo River, the hotel is surrounded by buildings that symbolize Kyoto's history and culture, such as Kennin-ji Temple, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, and the newly built Kaburenjo (theater) built last year.
The architecture was handled by Kengo Kuma & Associates, and the interior design by Singapore-based Brewin Design Office. They have reinterpreted traditional Kyoto townhouses in a modern way, incorporating the deep, intricate structure and the spirit of the "tsuboniwa" (courtyard garden) characteristic of townhouses, and expressing the spatial culture nurtured by life in Kyoto in a contemporary manner.
The interior of the building incorporates materials associated with Kyoto, such as cypress, cedar, bamboo, Japanese paper, and ceramics, creating a space that emphasizes the texture of the materials and the interplay of light, without relying on extravagant decorations.
Deluxe City King Room
Hot spring suite
All 89 guest rooms are spacious, each measuring over 50 square meters. A variety of room types are available, from the Deluxe City Room to the top-floor Capella Suite, which boasts 206 square meters, to the two Gion Suites with direct views of Kenninji Temple, and the six Onsen Suites, each featuring a private hot spring bath overlooking a courtyard garden, where guests can enjoy hot spring water delivered daily from the source.
SoNoMa by SingleThread
Night Dining "Yoi"
The hotel features three restaurants: "SoNoMa by SingleThread," the first overseas project of the Michelin three-star restaurant "SingleThread" based in Sonoma, California; "Lanterne," an all-day dining restaurant where guests can enjoy delicate French cuisine using seasonal ingredients; and "Yoi," a Japanese restaurant centered around a bar. Each restaurant offers a unique and memorable dining experience.
In addition, the complex includes "Auriga Spa," a spa with private rooms where guests can enjoy natural hot springs in private, as well as banquet halls, conference rooms, and a grand ballroom perfect for weddings limited to one couple per day, making it suitable for a variety of occasions.
