Arabia's masterpiece "Apila" is being reissued, making a comeback in Japan first.

2026.8.30

A collection featuring the four-leaf clover, a symbol of good luck.

The Apila tableware series, originally launched in 1971 by Finnish lifestyle brand Arabia, is being revived. It will be available in Japan first, starting September 16th, 2026 (Wednesday), at the official Arabia online store and Arabia retailers nationwide.

"Apila" was created by Birger Kaipiainen, a leading Finnish ceramic artist and one of Arabia's iconic designers. Using the same form as his masterpiece "Paratiisi," the design features four-leaf clovers covering the entire surface of the vessel, and continues to captivate many people even more than half a century after its creation. Its creation also has an anecdote that speaks to Arabia's approach to craftsmanship. "Apila" was born from an effort to minimize waste by utilizing the white vessels from the "Paratiisi" series before the decoration was applied, which, while perfectly fine in quality, exhibited slight individual differences. Production ceased in 1973 due to raw material issues, but there were constant calls for its revival, and it was re-released once in 2006. And in 2026, it will be re-released again, this time first in Japan.

Known as the "King of Ornamentation" and renowned for his rich use of color, Kaipiainen's "Apila" is a rare design within his collection, composed solely of varying shades of green. Clover, inspired by Finnish nature, spreads vibrantly, interspersed with four-leaf clovers, symbols of good luck. Its nostalgic yet fantastical appearance embodies Kaipiainen's unique aesthetic sensibility.
