Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2023.7.11

Can you read? Japan's traditional color "shiba-iro" The old man went to the mountain to cut grass...but it is not pronounced "shiba".

Shiba, which appears in Japanese folk tales such as ``Going to the mountains to harvest Shiba,'' is a general term for small miscellaneous trees and branches such as chestnuts, cypresses, and oaks that give you a sense of the nature of the mountains. Shiba-iro is a grayish tea made by brewing this Shiba tree and dyeing it with the juice. Due to its convenience, the pale cypress color has taken root in the culture of the townspeople of the Edo period, and has been accepted by many people as a traditional color that colors their daily lives.
