Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2023.7.19

Can you read? Japan's traditional color ``light onion color'' is the color of the Shinsengumi's haori.

Onion (ki) is the old name for "green onion". It refers to the light color of green onion leaves, and is a bright blue-green dyed with green onion indigo. During the Edo period, the lining of the clothes worn by uncouth country samurai and lower-class samurai was a light onion color, so the word "asagi ura" was used in a mocking sense, but the haori worn by the Shinsengumi was exactly that color. Over time, today it has been accepted as a traditional color loved by many people.

Light onion color = Asagi color

A transparent and bright blue-green color that has been dyed with indigo 3 to 4 times. That is "light onion color". It is read as Asagiiro.
