"August Ichi" is a name that exists among about 80 people nationwide, mainly in Gunma Prefecture. It seems to originate from a Shinto ritual in which ears of rice were picked and offered to the gods on the first day of August in the lunar calendar, in order to pray for a good harvest.
It is most common in Higashiazuma Town in Gunma Prefecture, and is sometimes written as ``Hachigatsu Sakuhi'' from Ibaraki Prefecture to Tohoku.
August 1st = Hozumi
``August Ichi'' is pronounced Hozumi. In the vicinity of Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, it is also read as "Hozomi".
