Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2023.8.5

Can you read? Japan's traditional color "Shishiro" is not pronounced "shishiro"

An evergreen shrub of the Rubiaceae family. Its Chinese name is sanshi, and the dried fruit has been used since ancient times as a raw material for crude and herbal medicines, and as a dye. A warm branch color made by overlaying the yellow dyed with gardenia fruit with a slight layer of red. Today, it is used as a natural dye to dye chestnuts used in New Year's dishes, Japanese sweets, pickled radish, etc.

Branch color = Kuchinishiro

Because the cypress fruit does not open its mouth even when ripe, the color of the branch was also written as ``the color that does not speak = the color that does not speak.'' ``Shishiiro'' is pronounced Kuchishiro.
