Deep scarlet, which has been used as a noble color since the Asuka period, is a dark red that is a mixture of black and deep purple, created by overlaying madder dye with purple roots. It is one of the color names derived from scarlet, and has other names such as ``Kuroake'', ``Fukahi'', and ``Kokiake''. In ancient times, it was known as the second highest clothing color after purple, which was determined by official rank.
deep scarlet = kokihi
According to the Engishiki, a legal code from the Heian period, the color is said to have a strong black tone and is created through a labor-intensive dyeing process in which 30 lbs of purple root are added to 40 lbs of madder. ``Shinhi'' is read by Kokihito.
