Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2023.10.12

Can you read? Although I don't read it as ``citrus color'' or tangerine color. It is the color of thin-skinned mandarin oranges grown in Japan.

Citrus is a type of mandarin orange that is thought to have been imported from China around the 8th century. It is a small evergreen tree of the Rutaceae family, Rutaceae, and is classified as a citrus fruit. Citrus is a warm and gentle orange color derived from this fruit peel, and was a traditional color dyed by combining gardenia and safflower. The old name for citrus is tachibana. Kanji appears in many stories such as Kokin Wakashu and The Tale of the Heike.

Citrus color = Koujiiro

Citrus was known as the color worn at the end of autumn in the costume of wives during the Heian period called ``Sou-no-ome''. ``Kojiiro'' is pronounced as kojiiro.
