Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2023.10.19

Can you read? Japan's traditional color "Tokiiro" is the color of the bird called Nipponia Nippon.

A bird classified in the genus Ibis in the order Pelecanidae and the family Ibisidae. The name comes from the color of the flight feathers and tail feathers that the hawk shows at the moment it takes flight. As its scientific name ``Nipponia nippon'' suggests, it was a bird that could be seen everywhere in Japan during the Edo period, and everyone was familiar with its color. Dark pink is a pale and gentle orange-tinged pink.

Tokiiro = Tokiiro

The dress color worn by Her Majesty the Empress in 2019, which was the first public visit since her ascension to the throne, was yellow. ``Tokiiro'' is read as Tokiiro.
