Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2023.11.1

Can you read? Japanese traditional color “Benikonkin”? Not. It is well known in Chinese medicine

A thick orange color that is a combination of red and yellow. After dyeing it yellow with Utsukin, it is then given a reddish tint with safflower and Suho, so it is said that there is a wide range of shades depending on the combination. It is said that this was a fashion that was born during the Edo period, when there was a ``Luxury Prohibition Order'' that prohibited wearing extravagant kimono, and people enjoyed using it as a ura-gashiri by attaching red-colored silk to the back of a plain kimono.
