This is a combination of two types of indigo: ``Blue indigo'', which has an impressive slightly dark blue color with a faint reddish and slightly greenish tint, and ``Wu indigo'', a bright red brought from the Wu country (China). The resulting color is two indigo. It is a bright yet bitter purple that is dyed with indigo over safflower dyeing, and in ancient Japan, the younger people wore a stronger red color, and the older they got, the stronger the indigo color became. It was a popular color at the time and could be enjoyed throughout your life.
Two indigo = Futaai
Niai is often seen in literary works from the Heian period, such as The Pillow Book and The Tale of Genji. ``Nii-ai'' is pronounced ``futaai''.
