What is Japan's traditional color "Jinsanko"?
Jinsanku is a medium red color with a slight yellow tinge. It is a traditional color dyed with madder or suho without using safflower, and is said to have been used on the lining of women's clothing during the Edo period. The color name, Jinzo, is taken from the name of Kikyoya Jinzaburo in Chojamachi, Kyoto, who created the red color from madder. The idea of creating colors that were once prohibited by the shogunate is something that remains unchanged today and in the past.
Jinsanko = Jinzamomi
Beni, which was very expensive in Edo at the time, was prohibited, but since Jinsanko was cheap, it was not prohibited and was loved by many common people. “Jinsanko” is pronounced as “Jinzamomi”.
