``Dokushima'' is said to have originated in Ueno, located in the southwestern part of present-day Gunma Prefecture, and is now widely distributed in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture.
The name Busujima is said to have originated from the name ``Busu'', which means aconite, and it is said that there was once ``Busujima Castle'' surrounded by rice fields in Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture.
Legend has it that Miura Kawachi-no-kami Kenni threw an aconite into the swamp to get rid of the large snake that protected Busujima Castle, causing the castle to fall. Although aconite is highly poisonous, it is also used as a medicinal herb in Chinese medicine, and the name Dokujima seems to have been given by a family that was involved in the manufacture and business of medicine.
