2024.2.1

Can you read? Japan's traditional color "Lurikon blue" is a color deeply related to Buddhism.

What is Japan's traditional color "Rurikon"?

Lapis lazuli, which has an impressive deep purple-blue color, is also known as ``Konruri'' and is a beautiful and noble traditional color. It is a color name that is also seen in scriptures as the color of Buddha's hair and Buddha's country (the country where Buddha lives), and the color name "Luri" is one of the Buddhist cloisonnés. In Japan, lapis lazuli is a color that has been associated with people since ancient times, as seen in the treasure trove of the Shosoin Temple in Todaiji Temple, where lapis lazuli is used to make cowhide belts called azudama obi.

It is said that lapis lazuli, which was dyed navy blue and then steamed as described above, was dyed a little brighter and flashier, and was very popular as a color for kosode during the Edo period. "Rurikon" is pronounced Rurikon.
