What is Japan's traditional color "Kinthujaku"?
The golden sparrow is a small bird of the family Aperidae. It is not the yellow of a bred canary, but a dull yellow-brown color similar to the plumage of a wild canary. Canaries have been kept as pet birds in Europe since ancient times, and canary breeding became popular in Japan when the Dutch arrived in Nagasaki during the Edo period. It was popular among samurai and aristocrats, and was even depicted in Japanese paintings by Katsushika Hokusai.
