What is Japan's traditional color "Donnezu"?
Donnezu is a slightly darker gray color than ``Surene'', which is a gray color that does not contain any other color. It is a gray color similar to the fur color of rats that live in sewers, etc., and is the darkest of the five shades of ink: dark, dark, heavy, light, and blue. It is said that it was originally written as ``Mizo Nezu'', but because it had a bad image, the word ``Don'' (don) was used instead. It is also the color often used in Japanese suits.
Rice bowl rat = gutter rat
The color name ``Donnezu'' began to appear in dye sample books such as the Yoshii Tokichi dye sample book from the mid-Edo period. ``Donnezu'' is pronounced as Dobunezu.
