What is Japan's traditional color "white green"?
The color name white means pale, and white-green is a pale green color with a whitish tinge. The raw material is a rock patina made by crushing the mineral malachite. The color of mineral pigments made by grinding this powder with water is called opal green in English. According to the Shosoin Documents, a document kept in the Shosoin Treasury of Todaiji Temple in Nara Prefecture, white-green has been used to color Buddhist statues and paintings since the Nara period.
White green = Byakuroku
In China's Qing Dynasty colored print picture book, ``Puspic Garden Pictorial History,'' it says ``head green, two greens, three greens,'' and head green is said to be white green. ``White Green'' is read as Byakuroku.
