What is Japan's traditional color "Ima-sama-iro"?
Ima-sama means "currently fashionable" and is a color that was popular among the aristocrats during the mid-Heian period. In the ``Genji Men and Women's Costumesho'', which was written in the late Muromachi period and is a commentary on the costumes of the Tale of Genji, it is written that ``Ima-sama-iro means crimson light, and Yurushi-iro is iris'', which was the Japanese style at the time. It is said that the color was close to the color of the clothes that were forbidden to be worn.
Ima-sama-iro = Ima-yoiro
A deep red plum color dyed with safflower. The red color dyed with safflower is said to have been particularly favored by women of the dynasty. ``Ima-sama-iro'' is read as imayo-iro.
