What is the traditional Japanese color “Kariyasu color”?




Kariyasu is a plant of the grass family and is related to pampas grass and other plants. It is said that the name ``Kariyasuiro'' was given because it is easy to cut. It is said that Kariyasu dyeing has been valued for its high ``fastness'', which refers to the resistance to color fading or transfer. A passage in the ``Nihon Shoki'' also says, ``As the peasants of the world, they wear yellow clothes,'' and examples of Kariyasu dyeing have been confirmed in the collection of Shosoin in Nara Prefecture. Among the color names of yellow, it has the oldest history.





Kariyasu color = easy to understand

 

A greenish-yellow color dyed with caryasu decoction and lye. It has been used in combination with indigo as an essential ingredient for dyeing green. ``Kariyasuiro'' is read as ``Kariyasuro''.
