What is Japan's traditional color "Kan Honghua"?
Safflower is an annual or biennial plant of the genus Safflower in the Asteraceae family that resembles thistle and is native to Egypt. According to various theories, it is said to have come to Japan between the 5th and 6th centuries, and was cultivated in Chonan-cho, Chiba Prefecture during the Heian period. It was also called ``kureai'' because it was a dye that came from the country of Wu (China), and later changed to ``kureai.'' It is also known as ``deep red''.
