What is the traditional Japanese color "Nadeshiko-iro"?




Dianthus color is a pale red with soft purple, reminiscent of dianthus flowers. Dianthus is a perennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family, and is one of the seven autumn herbs, with the most famous being the Dianthus arvensis. In Japan, the term "Yamato Nadeshiko" is used to describe a woman's elegance, and this is exactly what this "Dianthus" is referring to. Its delicateness is described in "The Pillow Book" as "beauty of the first class."
