What is the traditional Japanese color "Chigusa-iro"?
Chigusa-iro is a traditional bright blue color with a slight hint of green. Chigusa originally refers to the dayflower, or Tsuyukusa, which blooms in the early summer with purple-blue flowers. One theory is that it was named Tsuyukusa after the morning dew, as it blooms in the morning and wilts by midday. Tsuyukusa is a weed native to East Asia that has grown wild in Japan since ancient times and often appears in the Manyoshu. During the time of the Manyoshu, it was known by the beautiful-sounding name Tsukikusa (moon grass).
Chigusairo = Chigusairo
It is sometimes considered the same as sky blue, but strictly speaking it is a little darker and more greenish than sky blue.
