What is the traditional Japanese color "navy blue"?
Prussian blue is a deep, deep blue with a purple tint. It is a blue pigment that was introduced from China around the Asuka period along with ultramarine, and is made from azurite. During the Nara period, it was often used for Buddhist statues and paintings, and later in the Edo period, it was often used in ukiyo-e prints. It is a traditional color familiarly known by the abbreviation "Beroai."
Dark blue = Konjouiro
In the Meiji period, it began to be called by Western names such as Berlin Blue and Burgundy Blue. "Dark blue" is pronounced "konjo-iro."
