What is the traditional Japanese color "steamed chestnut color"?
When you hear the word "chestnut," you may think of a reddish-brown color like the skin of a chestnut, but "steamed chestnut color" is a soft, greenish-yellow color, like a steamed chestnut. It may be easier to understand if you imagine the color of deliciously cooked chestnut rice. There are other color names with the same "chestnut" in the name, such as fallen chestnut color, chestnut skin color, and fruit skin brown, but these are completely different colors.
Steamed chestnut color = Mushikuriiro
Although there are no clear records about its origin, the ancient Chinese dictionary "Erya" describes it as "Steamed chestnut, dyed indigo with yellow, like steamed chestnut," and it is thought that there was a similar color name in China, but Chinese steamed chestnut color and Japanese steamed chestnut color are considered to be different shades. "Steamed chestnut color" is pronounced "mushikuri-iro."
