The surname "Shirasui" is found in Kasuga City and the surrounding areas of Fukuoka Prefecture. It is said to have originated from the place name Shiramizu-sho, which was located in Naka County, Chikuzen Province, which is now Kasuga City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
The pronunciation varies slightly in the surrounding regions, with it being pronounced "Shirozu" around Kasuga City, Fukuoka Prefecture where it is said to have originated, "Shiramizu" from southern Fukuoka Prefecture through to Saga Prefecture, "Shiromizu" in the former Iki Town of Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, and further changed as it travels to Hokkaido where it is often pronounced "Shirozu."
Although the pronunciation is different, there are apparently about 13 place names written in kanji as "Shirasui," even just looking at village names from the Edo period.
Many of these villages are located in the mountains or valleys, and it is thought that the word "white water" may have referred to the fast-flowing rivers with their white, bubbling water, or the springs that bubble up from underground, kicking up sand.
