What is the traditional Japanese color "terukaki"?




Terakaki, characterized by its deep reddish orange color like a ripe red persimmon, is derived from the "kakiiro" (persimmon color) that has been used since the Heian period. Terakakiiro was widely used as a color name representative of reddish orange in the Edo period, and is also famous as the red color of Imari ware Kakiemon style ceramics. Ceramics using Terakakiiro were highly praised for their beautiful color, and were exported to Europe where they became popular.





Terigaki = Terigaki

 

Terigaki color is a combination of vivid Terigaki and bitter Kakishibu color. The "Kaki color" used in Kabuki costumes was mainly bitter Kakishibu color. "Terigaki" is pronounced "terigaki".
