What is the traditional Japanese color "Usuka"?
It is a pale yellowish brown with a light fragrance, as if it was dyed by boiling fragrant wood such as cloves and magnolia. The name "fragrance" was given because the scent of fragrant wood lingers on the dyed cloth for a while. It is said that aristocrats in the Heian period loved this elegant and soft color, and often incorporated it into their everyday attire.
Light fragrance = Usukou
The dark color of the fabric is dyed darkly with cloves, iron, and lye, while the light color of the fabric is dyed lightly without using a mordant, resulting in this pale yellow-brown color.
