What is the traditional Japanese color "Umezome"?
Plum dyeing is a light reddish brown color lightly dyed with Umeya shibu (plum juice). Umeya shibu is made by finely chopping red plum roots, boiling them, and adding a decoction of the bark, which is rich in tannic acid, to it. A reddish brown color that has been dyed two or three times is called "akaume," while one that has been dyed even more times and turned black is called "kuroume." By changing the mixture and amount of materials used as the mordant, a variety of shades of light and dark can be produced. It was used as a traditional dyeing technique that made use of natural materials.
Plum dyeing = Umezome
Plum blossoms bloom around February to March. Like cherry blossoms, plum blossoms are a representative Japanese flower that has been loved since ancient times, as they make us feel the arrival of spring a little earlier than cherry blossoms. They are also often written about in haiku and waka poetry, and are a flower familiar to Japanese people. "Umezome" is pronounced "umezome".
