What is the traditional Japanese color "Rikyu White Tea"?
Rikyu white tea is a light grayish yellowish brown. Although it contains the character "tea," the color is classified as grayish gray. There are no clear theories about the origin of this color, but it is thought to have originated in the early Kansei period, as it is mentioned as "Rikyu dyeing" in "Dyeing Hiden" from 9 (Kansei 1797) and "Rikyu tea" is mentioned in the "Tekanmo Setsuyo" Shinko Dyeing Study from the late Edo period.
Rikyu white tea = Rikyu Shiracha
Color names bearing the name of Rikyu appeared from the mid-Edo period onwards, but since Sen no Rikyu was a famous tea master in the Momoyama period, it is thought that colors bearing his name spread as elegant fashionable colors that reflected Rikyu's preferences. "Rikyu white tea" is pronounced "rikyu shiracha".
