The family name "Soume" has its roots in Asahi-Soume Village, Tsuru County, Kai Province, which is now Tsuru City, Yamanashi Prefecture. It can still be found in Yamanashi Prefecture and the Kanto region today.

The Sojo clan is a clan that has served the Takeda clan for generations, and along with the Takeda clan, they are said to be descendants of the Yoshimitsu line, a branch of the Seiwa Genji clan.

The Takeda clan is the family of the famous general Takeda Shingen, who was feared as the Tiger of Kai during the Sengoku period, but was wiped out with the death of his son, Takeda Katsuyori. After the fall of the Takeda clan, the Sosei clan became a hatamoto (main retainer) of the Edo Shogunate.

One famous historical figure is Sojo Sadako, who became the wife of Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, who served the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi.
